Name: Matty & Dom

Your business name: White Horse Coffee

Industry: Specialty Coffee Roaster

Please give us a brief description of your business: We started 10 years ago with a passion to serve the community delicious specialty coffee from the best coffee regions around the world. At that time specialty coffee was not very common or easily available in our communities. We began with our first café and then not long after started to source and roast coffee for ourselves. Then other cafes asked us to also roast for them and we grew from there.

What inspired you to start your business? It started with our own love for specialty coffee and a desire to share that with our community.

What is your business motto, personal mantra or favourite quote? We have a few mottos we remind each other about all the time
* Keep it special (our key tagline)
* Coffee for the community (our founding passion)
* Exceptional Product + Exceptional Service = love
* We’re only as good as our last cup (keeps us on our toes)
* Happy days (our aim for each day)

What advice would you give to others wanting to start a business?
* Start with a deep passion for what you do
* Be the best you can be so people cannot forget you. Develop yours and your team’s knowledge and craftmanship through continuous learning.
* Focus on a very simple equation: Exceptional Product + Exceptional Service = loyalty and love. Be equally committed to both.
* Hire the best people you can. Not the most skilful (you can teach skill), but friendly people with great character and integrity. People who will represent your brand the way you do.
* Know your key numbers. Profit = Revenue – Expenses. We know this is simple stuff, but with the day to day challenges of running a business, it’s easy to not pay attention to your key numbers.

How do you market your business and what works best for you? Most of our marketing is word of mouth inspired by our customers experiences. We support this with the following:
* We produce regular helpful and interesting content for people who are deeply passionate about coffee and most of whom also brew at home. We publish regular articles and have a YouTube show.
* We post regularly on social media, which is a combination of helpful, informative and inspiring content.
* We’ve built a great email database and communicate with our customers regularly.
* We get involved in industry events and seek to build relationships with others in the specialty coffee industry.

Do you have business mentors? Who do you seek advice from? Who do you look up to in business or strive to be like? Along the way we have built relationships with many great leaders from various industries. We don’t have a dedicated mentor, but a community of experienced and successful business leaders.

What are the best and worst things about owning your own business?
BEST: You have the ability to shape and build something important and valuable for the community.
WORST: At the end of the day it’s up to you and if you are not careful to create clear boundaries, it can be all-consuming.

What has been your most satisfying moment in business? We love what we do and have satisfying moments every day. We also have frustrating moments every day. That’s just business. But if we had to highlight one satisfying moment it would be our 10 year celebration late last year. Just looking around and seeing the community that has surrounded our company over the past decade was pretty special.

What are some of the biggest mistakes you have made in your business? We can’t pinpoint one major mistake, honestly, we make mistakes every week. But we always try and learn from them. The biggest mistake would be not learning from our mistakes and to continue doing the same things but expecting different results.

What is the best book you have ever read? So many great books, articles and podcasts we’ve been influenced by over the past 10 years. It’s hard to highlight just one. Amongst our key team we try and read across various industries from coffee, business, marketing, communication and so on. Then we often share these insights with each other and see where it makes sense for us to adopt what we are learning.

What is one item on your bucket list? Run a marathon
